1.1 Sustainability Science and Sustainable Development

This chapter begins with a discussion of the origins and present status of the idea of sustainable development. Next, it illustrates the range of contemporary challenges facing those who would promote a transition toward sustainability. It closes by analyzing emerging efforts to better harness science and technology to advance the sustainability agenda and characterizing the emerging field of sustainability science.
